Lesson 13 / 24 · 25 min · preparation time

Decide what this release is for

A release can help you develop a catalogue, invite listeners to a show, test a new direction or earn direct support. Choose a purpose within your resources. The plan should make room for the music itself, not consume all the time needed to create it.

Terms in this lesson

Distributor

A service that delivers recordings to music services and accounts for income under its terms.

Work through it

  1. 1
Choose the release and state its purpose in one sentence. Name one main audience and one action you want a listener to take.
  2. 2
List everything still needed: final audio, credits, permissions, artwork, delivery, profile access and communication materials.
  3. 3
Set a provisional date that allows time for collaborators and distributor checks. Use the provider’s current delivery guidance; avoid relying on a last-minute upload.
  4. 4
Set one process goal you control and one audience signal you will observe. For example: deliver a complete package on time, then examine returning listeners or direct responses.

You are ready to move on when…

You can leave an application or outside reply pending. Record the next step before moving on.
